Most visitors need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor before travel. Some nationalities require a full visitor visa. Applications are handled online.
Common Visa Types
ETA (Electronic Travel Authority)
For tourism or business visits up to 90 days. Linked to your passport. Apply online before travel. Cost: AUD 20.
eVisitor
Free online authorization for eligible countries. Valid for 12 months with multiple visits. No cost to apply.
Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)
For tourism, business, or family visits. Longer stays or ineligible nationalities. Apply through ImmiAccount. Cost: AUD 145.
Working Holiday Visa
For young travelers wanting to work and travel. Age and nationality limits apply. Health insurance required.

Before You Go
- ETA vs eVisitorThe ETA costs AUD 20 and is available to more nationalities. The eVisitor is free but only available to eligible countries. Both are linked to your passport and valid for multiple entries over 12 months.
- Health InsuranceWhile not mandatory for tourist visas, comprehensive health insurance is strongly recommended. Medical costs in Australia can be very high. Working holiday visa holders must have health insurance.
- Character RequirementsAustralia has strict character requirements. Applicants must disclose any criminal history. Serious criminal records or visa overstays in any country can result in refusal.
- Visa ProcessingETA and eVisitor approvals are usually instant but can take up to 24 hours. Visitor visa (subclass 600) processing takes 20-30 days. Apply well before your travel dates.
