Visa Requirements for Italy
Italy is part of the Schengen Area. Many travelers can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS authorization is mandatory from 2026.
Common Visa Types
Schengen Visa (Type C)
Short-stay visa for tourism, business, or family visits. Up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
National Visa (Type D)
Long-stay visa for stays over 90 days. For study, work, or family reunification. Apply at Italian embassy.
ETIAS
Travel authorization for visa-free visitors to Schengen. Required before boarding from late 2026. Valid for 3 years. Cost: approximately EUR 7.
Digital Nomad Visa
Launched 2024. Type D visa for remote workers. Valid 1 year, renewable. Requires proof of income, health insurance, and clean criminal record.
Transit Visa
Required if passing through Italy without entering the Schengen zone or for certain nationalities.
Entry Requirements
- Passport valid at least 3 months beyond intended departure from Schengen
- Proof of sufficient funds for the stay
- Return ticket or onward journey
- ETIAS authorization for visa-free travelers (from late 2026)
- Travel insurance recommended for Schengen visa applicants
Before You Go
- ETIAS RequirementStarting in late 2026, all visa-exempt travelers need ETIAS authorization before boarding flights to Schengen countries. Apply online via the official ETIAS website or mobile app. Cost is approximately EUR 7. Valid for 3 years or until passport expires.
- Digital Nomad VisaItaly's digital nomad visa (launched 2024) is a Type D long-stay visa for remote workers. Requires proof of employment, minimum income, comprehensive health insurance, and clean criminal record. Valid for 1 year, renewable. Does not require ETIAS for travel within Schengen.
- 90/180 RuleYou can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen Area. This rule applies to all short stays, including those made with ETIAS. Use an online calculator to track your days.
- Health InsuranceSchengen visa applicants need travel insurance with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. Digital nomad visa applicants may need comprehensive health insurance valid in Italy.
