Visa Requirements for Japan
Japan offers visa-free entry for many nationalities for short tourism stays. Longer stays, work, and study require advance visas. Requirements vary by passport.
Common Visa Types
Temporary Visitor
For tourism, business, or visiting friends. Usually 90 days. Many nationalities qualify for visa-free entry.
Working Visa
For employment in Japan. Requires a sponsoring employer and COE. Processing takes several weeks.
Student Visa
For long-term study at Japanese schools or universities. Requires proof of enrollment and financial support.
Digital Nomad Visa
Launched 2024. Valid for 6 months, non-renewable. Requires JPY 10 million (~$68,000) annual income. Available to ~49 eligible nationalities.
Transit Visa
Required if leaving the airport transit area. Some nationalities need it even for short layovers.

- No criminal record that would bar entry

- Digital Nomad VisaJapan's digital nomad visa requires JPY 10 million (~$68,000) annual income, valid health insurance, and a clean criminal record. It is valid for 6 months and cannot be renewed. Available to approximately 49 eligible nationalities.
- Health InsuranceDigital nomad visa applicants must have health insurance with coverage of at least JPY 10,000,000. Travel insurance may not be sufficient — check if you need comprehensive coverage valid in Japan.
- Passport ValidityYour passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay. Some airlines may require 6 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier.
- Visa ExtensionsExtensions for temporary visitor status are possible at regional immigration offices before your authorized stay expires. Working and student visas may have different extension rules.
- Overstay PenaltiesOverstaying a visa in Japan can result in deportation, fines, and future entry bans. If you need to extend your stay, apply at least 2 weeks before your authorized stay expires.
