Visa Requirements for Thailand
Thailand offers a 30-day visa exemption for tourism for 60 nationalities as of 15 September 2026 (Royal Gazette, 31 Aug 2026), replacing the former 60-day exemption. Longer stays need a tourist visa arranged in advance or the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) for remote workers.
Common Visa Types
Visa Exemption
30-day stamp for tourism for 60 nationalities, effective 15 Sep 2026. Land-border entries capped at 2 per calendar year (Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore exempt). Free. Extendable once by 30 days at immigration.
Tourist Visa
Single or multiple entry. Usually 60 days per entry. Apply at Thai embassies or online before travel.
Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
Launched 2024. 5-year multi-entry visa for digital nomads and remote workers. 180-day stays with extension option. Requires THB 500,000 (~$14,500) bank balance.
Non-Immigrant Visa
For work, retirement, business, or family. Requires sponsorship and longer processing times.

- DTV Digital Nomad VisaThailand's Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year multi-entry visa for remote workers, digital nomads, and long-stay tourists. Requires THB 500,000 (~$14,500) bank balance. Each stay is 180 days, extendable for another 180 days. Tax rules are evolving — foreign income remitted to Thailand may be subject to Thai tax if resident over 180 days.
- Visa ExtensionsTourist visa exemptions can be extended at immigration offices. The DTV allows extensions directly. Apply before your authorized stay expires to avoid penalties.
- Overstay PenaltiesOverstaying in Thailand can result in fines, deportation, and entry bans. Daily fines apply, and long overstays may lead to imprisonment before deportation.
The 15 September 2026 Rule Change
On 31 August 2026 the Royal Thai Government Gazette (Vol. 143, Special 207 Ngor) published four Ministry of Interior announcements that revoke the 60-day visa exemption of 15 July 2024 and replace it. They take effect 15 September 2026.
- 30-day exemption, tourism only — 60 countries and territories (down from 93). The purpose is now tourism only; the old scheme's short-term business wording is gone.
- 15-day exemption — Mauritius and Seychelles only.
- Visa on Arrival — cut to 3 countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Serbia (15 days, 2,000 THB).
- Land-border cap — visa-exempt entries through land checkpoints are limited to 2 per calendar year, except for nationals of Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Singapore.
- Pre-15 September stamps honored — anyone admitted before 15 September 2026 keeps the full 60 days stamped at entry. The repeal does not shorten a stay already granted.
- DTV unaffected — the Destination Thailand Visa (180 days per entry, 5 years, THB 500,000 provable funds) is a separate category and is not changed by this review. It must be applied for from outside Thailand.
Check your nationality against the current list at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before booking. If you need more than 30 days, apply for a tourist visa (60 days, extendable by 30) before you fly, or extend the 30-day exemption once at a local immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 THB).
